Historically, Burundi had the same colonial master as Rwanda, with Germany as first colonizers and Belgium as the second, till independence on july 1,1962.

Burundi is centrally located in the heart of Africa, and that is why is nicknamed ——-the little gem in the Africa Heartland. Geographically, Burundi is bordered to the north by Rwanda, to the east and south by Tanzania and to the west by the Democratic republic of Congo (DRC).  Briefly, Burundi is a landlocked country.

Bujumbura was once a small village after it became a military post in  German East Africa in 1889. The citys name changed from “usumbura” to Bujumbura when Burundi became independent on July 1, 1962. Bujumbura is the biggest city and hub on lake Tanganyika basin;  the country/s provinces of Buganza,  Bururi, Bujumbura and Makamba hug the north eastern shores of the lake.

  • PIERRE NKURUNZIZA PROFILE
  • Pierre Nkurunziza is from the province of Ngozi in northern Burundi, where he was born on 19 December 1964. He attended elementary school in his home town and continued his secondary education in Gitega- Province. In 2005, Nkurunziza was elected President. President Nkurunzizawas re-elected june 28,2010 for a second term as president of the republic of Burundi,  unprecedented in the history of the country, where it was used in elections followed by killings, displacement and exile of hundrends of thousands as people. Pierre Nkurunziza is known as a man of dialogue. He spared no effort to reach a peace agreement with the last rebel group, the palipe-hutu FNL, later FNL political party. The final cease- fire was signed in December 2008.
