Overview
The Shira Route is a beautiful and less-used trail that starts on the western side of Kilimanjaro. It begins at a higher altitude (Shira Gate) than most routes, offering dramatic views right from the start. The route crosses the Shira Plateau, a high-altitude moorland with wide-open landscapes and stunning views of Kibo and Mount Meru. It then joins the Machame route and follows the Southern Circuit to the summit. The Shira Route is ideal for climbers looking for a quiet, scenic path with fewer crowds and excellent acclimatization.
Trip Highlights
- Starts higher up (3,500m), skipping the rainforest
- Crosses the wide and scenic Shira Plateau
- Great acclimatization with “climb high, sleep low”
- Less crowded, very photogenic
- Flexible: can be done in 7 or 8 days, depending on acclimatization needs
