Kilimanjaro Packing List

Kilimanjaro Packing List

Packing properly is essential for a safe and comfortable Kilimanjaro trek. At Domestic Tourism Safaris, we provide a detailed gear checklist to ensure you’re well-prepared for the mountain’s changing weather, high altitudes, and challenging terrain. Since Kilimanjaro has five distinct climate zones—from tropical forest to alpine desert and arctic summit—you’ll need to dress in layers and pack both warm and waterproof clothing. Quality gear not only enhances your experience but also protects your health and increases your chances of a successful summit.

Essential Clothing & Gear

Layering is key. Pack moisture-wicking base layers, insulated mid-layers like fleece or down jackets, and a waterproof, windproof outer shell. You’ll need thermal underwear, a warm hat, gloves, hiking socks, and a balaclava or neck gaiter for summit night. Good-quality, broken-in hiking boots are a must. Don’t forget a comfortable daypack, sleeping bag (rated to at least -10°C/14°F), trekking poles, and headlamp with extra batteries. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm will protect you from strong UV exposure.

Other Must-Haves & Personal Items

Bring a refillable water bottle or hydration bladder (2–3 litres), high-energy snacks, personal toiletries, and a small first aid kit with medications for altitude, headaches, and blisters. Wet wipes, hand sanitiser, and toilet paper are useful, especially at higher camps. Power banks, a journal, and light entertainment (like a book or cards) can help pass downtime. Lastly, don’t forget your passport, travel insurance details, and a good attitude—your most valuable gear on the journey to Uhuru Peak!
